What we are working on NOW

We are encouraged by the feedback we are receiving from visitors to our blog. We have received many enquiries-people asking how to become immediately involved. Our plan is to develop skits that we can use to interview people about cancer. The interviews will be aired on T.V., You Tube, and on DVD.  We will cover the following themes in our educational interviewes:

1.Awareness  :-what do people know about cancer.

2. Stigma :- what is the reaction of the community when they know someone has cancer.

3.Voluntary testing:-what are the challenges of voluntary testing for cancer and where can one test.
We will be pleased to hear from you. Feel free to post your comments about our work on our blog.  Thank you for visiting.

Artists Fighting Cancer: Our Aspirations.

Like many Ugandans, artists have been touched by cancer. They know someone who is suffering from cancer or those who have died from the disease.

Simple questions like:
a) what is cancer?
b) who can get cancer?
c) why do some people get cancer and other not?
d) when can we suspect that someone may have cancer?
e) what can someone do when they fear that they have cancer?
f) what to do when one has cancer?
g) where can one find help if you loose a loved one to cancer?

These are simple questions, but many have no answers. In our meetings as artits, we have identified  lack of accurate and reliable information about cancer, services available, and what people can do to protect themselves and their loved ones is the obstacle to effectively and efficiently fighting cancer.

Through our reading of newpapers, magazines, browsing the internet, and litsening to news, we have learnt that local people can be empowered to fight cancer.  Artitsts play an important role in spreading the word about cancer. In the HIV field, artitsts like Bono of U2 have raised awareness about HIV in Africa. Artitsts in developed countries formed an organization called Standup2Cancer, which is raising millions of dollars to help people there to find solutions to cancer.  We too have committed to use our little resources to bring a positive message about cancer to Ugandans.  This blog will inform you about who were are, who is joining us, what they are doing, and how you can help.

We held several meetings in 2010 to discuss the problem of cancer in Uganda and what we can do about it.
We agreed that we can:
a) Record patient interest stories. These are experiences of patients with cancer and how the families have been affected-in their voice. We have done still and video recording for more than 10 patient interest stories.  We need help to perform high-quality editing for general and specific education.

b) Write poems, songs and scripts for drama and plays to educate people about cancer

c) Produce songs and plays that can be performed in schools and other audiences as well be produced for broadcasting

Our goals are simple. We are simple people and live in the communities we wish to educate. We encourage you to follow our activities on this blog and contact us if you wish to help.
